Samurai Hand Grinder

Crafting perfection through controlled variables.

Challenge

A great cup of coffee is crafted through precise control of multiple variables, from coffee bean cultivation and roasting to the final step where coffee enthusiasts grind and brew the beans at home. The quality of the grinding process marks the very first step of this journey, and a well-designed hand grinder essentially determines the success of the entire process.

Research & Insights

Our findings revealed that both seasoned coffee enthusiasts and newcomers share a common passion: experimenting with different coffee flavors by adjusting the grind size, even beyond quantitative metrics like uniformity, grind fineness, and efficiency. This playful adjustment and testing is precisely what makes hand-brewing so addictive.

Solution

The Samurai Hand Grinder is built on ergonomic principles, leveraging a dual bearing structure paired with 5-axis CNC-machined 420-grade high-hardness burrs to ensure consistent and stable grind quality.

The design features a precision-adjustable mechanism with laser-etched markings, allowing users to effortlessly control grind granularity.

To achieve a sleek, minimalist aesthetic, the monolithic handle is crafted through cold forging and CNC milling of aluminum alloy—reminiscent of a samurai sword drawn sharply from its scabbard. By reducing components, the design not only enhances durability but also ensures a seamless user experience.

Outcome & Impact

The product embodies XIONG & YANG’s signature minimalist and restrained aesthetic, subtly embedding technical ingenuity into a simple form. This approach reinforces and communicates the brand’s core values to users: precision, elegance, and a dedication to craftsmanship.
