Challenges
Founded in 1959 in the municipality of Herzebrock-Clarholz, Germany, Steinel has long been a pioneer in sensor-controlled lighting, thermal tools, and hot-melt adhesive applicators, serving as a technology manufacturer and innovation leader in the market.
Within the XSolar project framework, we selected three locations abandoned by conventional solar lights. Among them, the Solo Pezo was a uniquely remote architectural project with no access to modern infrastructure or electrical resources. In these scenarios, we prioritized designing a lighting solution that balanced flexibility in usage and operational efficiency.
Research & Insights
With no reliable electrical supply in the target environments, we analyzed the pros and cons of various natural energy sources and their compatibility with the product. After rigorous evaluation, solar energy was chosen as the most dependable, convenient, and clean power source for the lighting system.
Considering the variable nature of sunlight, we envisioned the XSolar as a flexible lighting tool capable of adapting to different solar intensity levels across diverse environments.
Solution
The design focused on maximizing flexibility and efficiency during use.
Equipped with monocrystalline solar panels and mineral glass covers, the XSolar ensures optimal sunlight-to-energy conversion. The lamp body, designed in a triangular shape, connects to a hinge mechanism that allows rotational adjustments to suit specific usage scenarios. A matte metal finish enhances its durable and trustworthy aesthetic. A built-in compass enables precise southward alignment to maximize daytime sunlight absorption. Additionally, the solar panel and LED panel can be individually installed. A sensor at the top of the lamp ensures efficient utilization of stored energy.
Achievements & Impact
The XSolar L-S has earned prestigious awards, including the 2014 German IF Design Award, German Designer Award, Deutscher Design Club Award, IDA International Design Awards, and International Design Awards. Beyond accolades, it has addressed real-world challenges and been widely adopted in various applications.
